Check the battery first

Many fobs sent for programming only need a battery. Summer heat, which NOAA's Georgia summary puts at long, hot and humid, wears down the coin cells in most fobs. A fob that works beside the car but not across a lot, or only on some days, often has a weak cell. Fit the type printed on the old one and test again before booking programming.

Moisture is the other enemy. NOAA notes that tropical storm remnants can bring heavy rain to Georgia. A fob soaked in a downpour or carried in a damp pocket can corrode at the battery contacts, so open it, dry it and fit a new cell before deciding it has lost its programming.

Where the car will be

Programming needs access to the car itself, with every door and the ignition within reach, so say exactly where it is.

• Downtown garages. Give the garage name and level. Access can shift on event days: for the March 17, 2026 St. Patrick's Day parade, the city gave monthly pass holders exclusive access to their garages until 8 a.m.
• On the street. The Victorian Historic District spans 45 city blocks, so give the block, the cross streets and which side of the street the car is on.
• Your own driveway. Say whether there is room to open every door.

What to bring

• Every fob and key for the car, working or not. Some vehicles erase any fob that is not present when a new one is programmed, and the missing one stops working.
• The VIN, plus the year, make and model
• Photo ID and the registration
• Any fob you bought yourself; the part number or FCC ID on its back helps confirm it matches the car
