What makes a lock problem urgent in Savannah

Heat and storms, more than cold, are the conditions to plan around in Savannah. NOAA's Georgia summary describes long, hot and humid summers, calls direct hurricane landfalls rare and adds that tropical storm remnants can bring heavy rain and strong winds.

  • Someone at risk. If a child, a pet or anyone unable to get out is shut in a hot car or a locked house, call 911 first.
  • A home you can't secure. Wind or water can push a door out of line so it no longer latches, leaving the house open overnight.
  • After a break-in. Call the police first, and leave the door, frame and lock as they are until officers have seen them. Photograph the damage, then arrange to have the door secured.

A lock that is stiff but still works, or a lost spare when you still have a key, can usually wait.

A landlord who locks you out

The Georgia Landlord-Tenant Handbook, from the Department of Community Affairs, says a landlord who wants a tenant out must use the court's dispossessory process. Changing the locks or otherwise blocking access first is self-help eviction, which the handbook calls illegal even if the tenant broke the lease. A landlord's lockout is a legal dispute, not a locksmith job. This is general information, not legal advice.

Before work starts

Get the total in writing and keep the receipt. The Georgia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division takes complaints about businesses that act unfairly, deceptively or unlawfully, and suggests settling the problem with the business first, before filing online or by phone. If the fix means a new door in a local historic district (Sections 7.8, 7.9 and 7.11 of the City of Savannah Zoning Ordinance), ask preservation staff at the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission whether a Certificate of Appropriateness is needed before permanent work.
