Car Key Replacement in Aurora, IL

First, find out whether the car was moved

Section 27-171(b) of Aurora's city code lets police move a car that broke the 2-inch snow-parking rule in 27-171(a) to a public garage or other safe place, at the owner's or operator's expense, when it obstructs traffic or creates an unsafe condition. If the car is gone after a storm and the keys are missing too, find out whether it was moved before you arrange a new key. This is general information, not legal advice.

Proof that the car is yours

A replacement key is cut and programmed for one vehicle, so have ownership papers ready:

• photo ID
• the registration or title from your state motor-vehicle agency, in a name that matches the ID
• the vehicle identification number (VIN), which is on the registration and usually on a plate visible through the windshield on the driver's side

If the documents are locked in the car, say so in the request.

Where the car is parked

Say where the car sits and whether the driver's door can be reached: a driveway or garage at home, a curb or lot on the West Side, the East Side or the Far East Side near Eola Road or Route 59, or a downtown street. In a garage, note how much room there is beside the driver's door.

What to have ready

1. Year, make and model.
2. The key type: plain metal key, key with buttons on the head, separate remote, or push-button start fob.
3. Whether any working key still exists, since copying one is simpler than starting from none.
4. Photo ID and the registration or title.
5. Every remaining fob for the car, since adding a key can involve key fob programming.
