Proof the car is yours

A new key can start a car, so replacing one begins with showing that you own it. Have these ready:

• Photo ID whose name matches the registration or title
• The registration card or title; if they are in the locked car, say so
• The VIN, which shows through the windshield at the base of the driver's side and also appears on the registration
• If the car is registered to a parent, an employer or anyone else, a way to reach that owner

Where the car is sitting

Where the car sits shapes the job, so describe its setting.

• Lake Springfield. The reservoir was completed in 1935 and has residential sites. If the car is parked at a lake home, give the street address and say where on the property it sits: the drive, a garage or the street out front.
• Harvard Park and other grid streets. Harvard Park runs from Sixth to 11th streets between Ash Street and Stanford Avenue. On a grid like that, the numbered street and the nearest cross street locate the car. Say whether it is on the street, in a driveway or in a garage, and whether its doors can open fully.
• Snow emergency routes. The city's snow emergency ordinance, Section 79.30, bars parking on designated snow emergency routes once an emergency is declared, and cars left there can be impounded.
