Where the oldest doors are

The Warren County Historic Overlay Standards (January 2023) date much of Bowling Green's older housing:

• College Hill, along State Street between downtown and Western Kentucky University, where most houses and churches went up between 1840 and 1930.
• Upper East Main, a cluster of late 19th- and early 20th-century houses between downtown and Reservoir Hill.
• St. Joseph, across the Louisville and Nashville Railroad tracks at the western end of Main Street, with brick and frame workers' houses from 1860 to 1940.

Doors from those decades may still carry mortise locks set in a pocket in the door edge, or surface-mounted rim locks. Fitting a modern tubular deadbolt can mean boring new holes and filling the old pocket, while a new mortise lock can often use the pocket already there.

Historic district rules

College Hill and Upper East Main are two of the four local districts, with Downtown Commercial and Chestnut-Dodd, where certain exterior work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Section III.C.8 of the standards asks that original doors, transoms, hardware, locks and doorknobs be kept, and limits security doors with extensive grillwork to rear entrances or entrances not readily visible from the street. Section 3.15.3.B of the Warren County Zoning Ordinance divides what staff may approve from what the Historic Preservation Board must review, so check whether a certificate is needed before swapping visible hardware on a street-facing door. When replacement is the right call

• A cylinder or latch that has worn loose and can no longer be matched with parts
• A knob lock where you want a deadbolt, on a door that can take a new bore
• A lock body damaged by a break-in or storm

What to measure and send

Photograph both faces of the door and its edge. Send the door's thickness and the distance from its edge to the center of the knob or cylinder; for a mortise lock, add the faceplate height.
