Downtown storefronts
The Downtown Commercial District covers the original courthouse square and the three-block commercial strip linking it to the railroad. Section III.A.4 of the county's historic overlay standards asks that original storefront doors be kept. Where the original cannot be matched, the preferred replacement is a plain wood door with a single glass light. Dark or bronze anodized metal with a wide stile may be substituted, but raw aluminum is not considered appropriate.
That guidance bears on the lock. A wide stile has room for a standard mortise lock with a full deadbolt, while a narrow-stile door is limited to narrow-backset deadlocks and slimmer exit hardware. Downtown Commercial is a local district, so a Certificate of Appropriateness may be required before a new door goes in.
Chestnut Street, lodging and campus houses
- Chestnut-Dodd. This block of Chestnut Street is now mostly commercial and multifamily. A business in a converted house may be running on residential door hardware that was never meant for staff traffic.
- Lodging. The city's Short Term Rental Guide (December 2024) requires two remote ground-floor exits in lodging houses, so any hardware change on an exit door should leave it usable as an exit.
- Near campus. Houses used by fraternities and sororities, and university-affiliated rooming houses, are inspected every year for safety and code compliance under the University District overlay zone, so plan exit-door hardware changes with that inspection in mind.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Staff and tenant turnover
When an employee leaves without returning a key, rekey every cylinder that key opened. A master key system lets you change one area without reissuing every key, and a key log shows who holds what. In a multi-tenant building, the lease usually sets who may change a suite lock and who controls the shared entry.
What to send
The door type (storefront, rear service door, office or cabinet), the door material, how many doors and keys are involved, and whether the building is in a local historic district. Commercial locksmith is the service page, lock rekeying covers the key side, and the downtown district is outlined on the Bowling Green page.
