Where keys take the most strain

• Shared front doors. The historic overlay standards describe the Chestnut-Dodd block of Chestnut Street as now mostly commercial and multifamily. When several households or businesses use one entrance, its cylinder wears sooner and the key turns harder.
• Old cylinders. Upper East Main, between downtown and Reservoir Hill, is a cluster of houses from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A worn cylinder in an old door, or a thin key cut decades ago, can snap under ordinary force.

What not to do

• Do not push another key or any tool into the keyway; it drives the piece deeper.
• Do not use glue to try to pull the piece out.
• Do not spray heavy oil into the lock.
• If an end of the key sticks out, do not pry or twist it; that is how a piece breaks off flush.
• Keep the broken half. It can help when a new key is cut.

• Which lock it is: a shared entrance, a unit door, a deadbolt or a padlock

• Whether a spare key exists, so the lock can be tested afterward
