What counts as urgent

Urgent means a safety or security problem that cannot sit: a door that will not close or latch after storm damage, a break-in, or a person or pet shut out of or into a dangerous place. If anyone's life is at risk, including a child, an older adult or a pet locked inside a home or car, call 911 first; a locksmith request is not a substitute. After a break-in, call the police before anyone else, and do not enter or touch anything until they say it is safe. Securing the door comes after that.

Storms and tornado damage

According to NOAA, Kentucky averaged about 24 tornadoes a year from 1991 to 2019, and the December 10–11, 2021 outbreak caused 76 deaths. After tornado or wind damage, a split jamb needs repair before a new deadbolt will hold, so a door that cannot be secured may need frame work as well as a new lock. Photograph the damage before anything is moved.

Cold, heat and being shut out

The state's summers are warm to hot and humid, and parts of it fall below 0°F in winter. Being shut out at either extreme is more than an inconvenience, so wait in a car, a neighbor's home or a shop. Batteries in key fobs and smart locks lose output in hard cold, so a keypad or fob that fails on a frozen morning may simply need a new battery and the mechanical key.

Getting a technician to the door

In a shared building, say who can open the street door or lobby. One Louisville home in ten is in a building of two to four units, and Old Louisville has several 20th-century buildings of 15 to 20 stories, so a closed lobby can stop help before it reaches your door.

What to send

In an urgent request, give the address or nearest cross streets, what happened, whether anyone is inside or at risk, and whether police have been called. Say which door is involved and whether it opens onto a shared hallway.
