Humid summers and swollen doors

NOAA's climate summary describes Kentucky summers as warm to hot and humid, with average annual precipitation from about 38 inches in the northeast to around 58 inches in the southeast. Humid weather can swell a wood door until the deadbolt drags on the strike plate. Adjusting the strike is kinder to the lock than forcing the key, which can snap; if that happens, see broken key extraction. In Louisville, 36.5 percent of homes date from before 1960, so a good share of the doors and locks have been through many humid summers.

When the frame is the problem

A latch that no longer meets the strike can be a door or jamb problem rather than a worn lock. Where tornado or wind damage has split a jamb, that repair comes before any new deadbolt, and the frame may need as much attention as the lock. Repairs in preservation districts

The Landmarks Ordinance (LMCO §§ 32.250–32.263) covers seven districts, including Old Louisville, Cherokee Triangle and Clifton. Section 32.256(A) says that ordinary exterior repairs that exactly reproduce the existing design in the existing material are not exterior alterations. What to send

For a lock repair request, name the door and describe what the lock does: it sticks, turns without catching, takes the key with difficulty, or rubs the frame in damp weather. Say when it started and whether the door faces a street in a preservation district. If it binds only in humid weather, say so, since that points to the frame or strike rather than the lock.
