Storefronts on West Main Street and in the districts

Downtown's West Main Street district has the largest collection of cast-iron facades outside New York's SoHo. It is one of seven preservation districts named in the Landmarks Ordinance (LMCO §§ 32.250–32.263, as amended by Ordinance No. 096, Series 2019); Limerick, Old Louisville and Butchertown are among the others.

Section 32.252(D) requires a certificate of appropriateness before an exterior alteration to a structure in a district. A storefront door in a different design is not among the examples § 32.256(A) lists as non-alterations, while rekeying or repairing the hardware already there leaves the facade unchanged. Tall buildings and shared doors

Old Louisville also has several 20th-century buildings of 15 to 20 stories. In any multi-story building, a request should say whether it covers the street or lobby door, a suite door, a stairwell or a shared room, and who can approve the work: the owner, a property manager or the tenant. A lock on a shared door affects everyone who uses it.

Tenant and staff turnover

Keys outlive the people who held them. When a tenant moves out, an employee leaves or a contractor finishes, lock rekeying makes the old keys stop working without changing the doors. A written record of who holds which key tells you how many need to be reissued. If a lock is worn out or the door itself has been changed, replacement may be the better route than rekeying.
