Is it the fob, the battery or the setting?

Key fob programming pairs a remote or smart key with the car's computer. Before assuming a fob needs it, rule out the simpler causes that Annapolis conditions bring.

• Cold. Coin-cell batteries lose output in the cold, so a fob that works from the porch in summer may barely reach the car on a winter morning.
• Moisture. NOAA describes warm, humid Maryland summers. A fob dropped on a wet dock or soaked in floodwater can corrode inside, and salt water is especially hard on the circuit board.
• Distance and structure. In a multi-level garage such as Gotts, Knighton or Hillman, the walls and floors between you and the car can weaken the signal. Stand next to the car before deciding the remote has failed.
