Snow emergencies set the clock

When the City of Boston declares a snow emergency, cars parked on posted main roads are ticketed and towed. If you are locked out of a car on one of those roads as a storm moves in, get the lockout sorted before the ban begins; otherwise a locked car can become a towed one. Say in your request whether the block has snow-emergency signs so the timing is clear from the start.

Lockouts that come with snow clearing

Digging out causes lockouts of its own: keys left on the seat while scraping the windshield, or a fob in a coat tossed inside. Space savers are permitted only during a declared emergency and have to be removed 48 hours after it ends; Bay Village and the South End ban them outright, so a dug-out space in those neighborhoods is not held for you while you wait for help. Children, pets and temperature

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked inside, call 911 first, in any season. A closed car in the sun can overheat even on a mild day, and in winter the cabin cools once the engine is off. NOAA's state summary lists January near the coast at around 30 °F. Do not wait for a locksmith in either case.

• The street and nearest cross street, or the garage name and level.
• Whether the block is a posted snow-emergency route.
• Make, model, color and plate number.
• Where the keys are: on a seat, in the ignition, in the trunk or unknown.
• Photo ID, plus the registration if it is not locked in the car.
