Snow bans raise the stakes

In its February 2026 snow parking ban, Springfield closed the even-numbered side of streets to parking from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and the odd-numbered side from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Public works and police were to ticket and tow violators. While the ban lasted, Springfield Parking Authority lots and garages, Union Station among them, were opened for public parking. Each notice sets its own terms, so read the current one.

Where the car is

• Metro Center. Downtown, give the street and nearest cross street, or the garage name and level.
• Boston Road. Plazas along this road were planned around cars, and one lot can serve many stores, so name the plaza and the store nearest the car.
• Mason Square. Around American International College, give the street or lot name and the closest building.
• Residential streets. Give the house number the car is parked in front of and which side of the street it is on.

Cold, heat and anyone inside

In winter, wait inside a shop or lobby rather than standing beside the car. In summer, a closed car gets far hotter than the air outside. If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is locked inside, call 911 right away instead of waiting for a locksmith.
