Remote start and the unattended-car rule

Kansas City's code, Sec. 70-251, requires an unattended car to have the engine stopped, the ignition locked, the key removed and the brake set, but a remote starter used with the doors locked satisfies the engine part. Drivers who warm the car from indoors on winter mornings depend on that remote. How humidity and cold wear on a fob

NOAA's summary for Missouri calls the summers warm and moist and says humidity there has been rising for decades. Moisture can work into a cracked case and corrode the battery contacts, and a battery weakened by a cold night may work at noon and fail at dawn. Before assuming a fob needs programming:

1. replace the battery with the size printed on the old one
2. check that the case closes fully and the buttons are intact
3. try the spare fob; if it works, the fault is in the first fob, not the car

Garage and street settings

Programming happens at the car, so where it sits matters. At Country Club Plaza, cars park in garages under and behind the shops as well as on rooftops. A rooftop deck is open to sun and weather while a lower level is not, so name the level and the nearest shop or entrance. A car at the curb is simpler to reach, but give the side of the street and the nearest address.

• every fob and key you still have, working or not, since some vehicles clear any fob that is not present during programming
• the VIN, and the year, make and model
• registration or title and photo ID
