When the fob is the problem

A lot of fob trouble is not programming at all. Coin-cell batteries weaken in the cold, and NOAA's state climate summary notes that Missouri winters bring cold arctic air. A fob that unlocks the car from the front steps in October but has to be held against the door handle in January usually wants a fresh battery.

Summer is a different strain. NOAA describes warm, moist Gulf air and a summer humidity trend that has risen since the mid-20th century. Moisture that gets into a fob through a cracked case or a worn button pad can corrode the contacts.

Try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one first. If the fob still fails, or the car no longer responds to it at all, it may need programming or a replacement remote.

Where programming happens

Programming is done at the car, so where it is parked shapes the visit. Say which of these fits:

• On the street. Give the block and the side of the street, and whether the driver's door can be opened without stepping into traffic. After a snowfall, say if the car is still dug in.
• In a private garage. Say how the garage is reached and whether there is room to open the driver's door fully.
• In a parking structure. Give its name, the level and any gate or ticket needed to get in.

Programming draws on the car's battery, so mention one that has been slow to start in the cold.

What to have ready

• Every working fob for the car. On some cars, programming a new fob clears any that are not present, so a spare left in a drawer can stop working.
• The VIN, which is also on the registration.
• Photo ID and proof of ownership, such as the registration.
• The vehicle's year, make and model, and how many fobs you want working.
