A key fob runs on a small coin cell, and cold cuts a battery's output. A fob that unlocks the car from across the street in September may need to be held next to the door handle in January. Before assuming a fob needs programming, try a new battery. If the car still does not respond, the fob may have lost its pairing or been damaged by water or a drop.
