Cold is hard on key fobs. The coin-cell battery inside loses capacity as the temperature drops, so a fob that worked in October can start failing on the first bitter morning. Warning signs are a shorter range, needing several presses, or a "key not detected" message on a push-button car. Replace the battery first; plenty of fobs that seem dead need nothing more.

Snow adds moisture. A fob dropped in slush, or left in a wet coat pocket, can corrode inside. Let it dry at room temperature rather than on a radiator. If only one working fob is left, that is the moment to add a spare, before the last one fails too.

Street parking and garages

Programming is done at the car, usually with the ignition on, so a garage or driveway is simple to reach.
