When the fob is the problem

Most remote fobs run on a small coin-cell battery, and cold can weaken it. A fob that unlocked the car from across the street in October may need to be held near the door handle by January. The state averages more than 40 inches of snow a year, and a fob dropped in a snowbank or carried in a wet glove can take water through worn buttons and seams, which corrodes the contacts.

Before assuming a fob has lost its programming, try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one. If the range is still poor, the buttons do nothing, or the car will not recognize the fob to start, the fob may need to be paired to the car again or replaced.

Where the car sits during programming

Programming happens at the car, which usually has to stay put with the ignition in use for the whole session. In Buffalo, choose the spot with that in mind:

• In winter, curb parking is restricted overnight on bus-route streets under City Code Chapter 479, Section 15.45, and the city's 2025-2026 list includes Elmwood Avenue and Hertel Avenue, among others. • a note of what the fob does now: nothing, only some buttons, or a short range
