Which door stands between you and your keys

A City of Buffalo historic survey of Broadway-Fillmore counts two-family houses as 30 percent of the city's residential housing. A Buffalo lockout can involve a sequence of doors, and the building type decides where it starts.

• Two-decker. If a shared street or hall door comes before your own, the other household or the owner may be able to let you into the hall, leaving only your flat's door.
• Double house. Two mirror-image units stand side by side. In the earliest doubles the two main entrances sit together at the center of the facade, so name your door by side (left or right, facing the house) rather than "the front door."
• Workers' cottage. The survey describes mostly detached frame cottages of one or two stories, many with additions stretching back along long, narrow lots. Mention whether the addition has its own rear door and whether that one is locked too.
• Apartment over a shop. On Broadway, two-part commercial blocks put shops at street level and apartments, offices or meeting halls above. Say whether you are shut out at the street entrance to the upper floors or at your own apartment door.

Waiting out the weather

The state's climate report notes that Arctic air crossing Lake Erie and Lake Ontario can drop as much as 48 inches of snow in a single storm. In a storm or hard cold, wait somewhere warm, such as a neighbor's hallway or an open business, rather than on the porch, and say where you are. If anyone at risk is shut inside or outside in dangerous cold, call 911.

What to have ready

Have proof that you live at the address, ideally photo ID showing it. If your ID carries an older address, a lease, a deed, or mail in your name at the address will help. If the ID is locked inside with your keys, say so and offer one of those papers instead.
