How lake-effect winters wear on locks

The state's climate report singles out the lake-effect snow that forms when Arctic air crosses Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. For a lock, the harm comes less from the snow than from what follows: snow blown against the door melts, water runs into the keyway, and it turns to ice again overnight. Typical results:

• a key that goes in but will not turn, because ice is holding the pins
• a latch or deadbolt frozen in its strike, so the door stays shut even with the right key
• after a few seasons, rust and grit in a cylinder that never fully dries out
