Proving the car is yours

A replacement key is cut and programmed for one vehicle, so have proof of ownership ready:

• A photo ID with the same name as the vehicle paperwork.
• The title or current registration issued by your state motor-vehicle agency.
• The vehicle identification number, or VIN. It is on the registration and on a plate visible through the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side.
• For a leased or financed car, the lease or loan papers, which also show the VIN.

If the registration is locked inside the car with no working key, say so in your request.

Where the car is waiting

Close to half of Charlotte households rent, per the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, and renters' cars may sit in apartment or condominium lots. If a car will sit in such a lot without a working key, tell the property manager, and note the storage facility named on the sign in case the car is moved.
