A child or pet inside comes first

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked in the car, call 911 now. A closed car in the sun gets far hotter than the air outside, and North Carolina summers are very warm and humid to begin with, according to NOAA. Do not wait for a locksmith in that situation.

Game nights and event parking in Uptown

Uptown holds Bank of America Stadium, Spectrum Center and Truist Field, so on event nights drivers park in decks and lots they may not know well. Trade and Tryon, which divide Uptown into four wards, give you corners to name. For a lockout there, send:

• The venue you parked for, and the deck or lot name.
• The level, row or space number, and which entrance you used.
• The nearest corner along Trade, Tryon or the closest cross street.

If you are unsure of the deck name, a photo of the nearest sign or level marker helps.

When the car is in a private lot

A car waiting for help in a private lot can still be towed, and Charlotte City Code Chapter 6, Article XI regulates that. Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., a tow needs the lot owner's or agent's signed authorization and a police complaint number. Under Sec. 6-565, a hooked vehicle that has not yet been removed must be released on request once the posted fees are paid, the owner may retrieve personal property, and the storage lot must be inside city limits.

What to send for a car lockout

1. The venue, deck or lot, or the street and nearest cross street.
2. Whether the car is in a deck, a private lot or at the curb.
3. The year, make, model and color.
4. Where the keys are: in the ignition, on a seat, in the trunk, or lost.
