Will a smart lock fit your door?

Close to half of Charlotte's homes were built in 2000 or later, according to 2024 Census Bureau estimates. Exterior doors of that age are usually bored for a standard deadbolt, which is the hole most smart deadbolts are made to replace. Even so, check the maker's door-thickness and backset range against your door before buying.

Older doors are less predictable. A Victorian house in Uptown's Fourth Ward may still have an original door built around a mortise lock, and many retrofit smart locks are not made for that pocket. Those doors may need a mortise-style model or a different approach.

Who has to approve it

• Renters. Get the landlord's written approval, and agree who keeps a key and the admin code.
• Towers and condominiums. In an Uptown tower, the lobby, elevator and garage systems belong to the building. A smart lock goes only on your own unit door, and an association may have rules about hardware on corridor doors.
• Historic districts. In a local historic district, UDO Section 14.2.E counts the type and style of doors as exterior features, so a keypad that changes how the entry looks is worth raising with Historic District Commission staff before installing. This is general information, not legal advice.

Heat, humidity and batteries

Both ends of the climate are hard on a keypad. NOAA describes very warm, humid summers and moderately cold winters, with the state averaging about 5 inches of snow a year. Sun on a west-facing door can heat a keypad well above the air temperature, and cold weakens batteries, so a lock that works in April may give low-battery warnings in January. Humidity and wind-driven rain are hard on exterior electronics; choose a model made for outdoor exposure.

Storms and ice can also cut power and home Wi-Fi. The lock itself runs on batteries, but app access and alerts may stop.

• Replace batteries at the first low-battery warning, and before winter.
• Keep a working mechanical key, and keep it out of the car.
• Learn how your model takes emergency power at the keypad, if it has that option.
