Proving the car is yours

A new key can start a car, so whoever makes one should see proof that you own it or are allowed to drive it. Have these ready:

• Photo ID with a name that matches the vehicle paperwork
• The registration card or title; if they are locked in the car, say so, since they can be checked once it is open
• The VIN, printed on the dashboard at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the driver's door jamb and on the registration
• If the car belongs to an employer or a relative, their written permission along with the paperwork

If the title itself is missing, a duplicate comes from your state motor-vehicle agency, not from a locksmith.

Where the car is parked

Programming a key needs the car itself, so where it sits shapes the job.

• Parking decks. The Allentown Parking Authority opened its decks to the public, except Strata, during the city's February 2026 snow emergency. If your car is in a deck, give the deck name, level and space, and say whether you also lost a ticket or access card.
• Center City errands. Hamilton Street was developed as Allentown's central shopping district, and a key lost during errands there can leave the car in a lot someone else controls, so mention any gate or closing time.
• Snow emergency routes. Cars on the city's snow emergency routes must be moved after a declaration (Article 527.02), and police tow them as necessary. If that is where your car sits with no key, say so early. This is general information, not legal advice.

• Year, make, model and trim, and whether the car uses push-button start, a remote-head key or a plain metal key
• How many keys you had and whether any still work; copying a working key is simpler than making one when none are left
