What counts as urgent

A lock problem is urgent when it leaves someone unsafe or a building open. In Allentown that usually means one of these:

  • Shut out in a storm. The city declared a snow emergency in February 2026. A lockout in weather like that matters most when someone at risk from the cold, such as a small child or an older adult, is outside with you.
  • A door that will not lock. A broken deadbolt on an exterior door at night, or a shop door that will not secure at closing.
  • Storm damage. NOAA's state climate summary reports that extreme precipitation events have become more frequent in Pennsylvania, and it lists catastrophic flooding in 1972 and 2011. A door that has swollen, shifted or been damaged so that it will not latch, or a lock that sat in floodwater, needs attention.
  • After a break-in. Call the police first, and wait until they have finished before touching the door, the frame or the lock. A forced door often needs a new strike plate, a frame repair or a new lock before it can be secured, and photos of the damage help with any insurance claim.
