Saying where the car is

The first thing anyone needs is where the car is, and some Knoxville streets make that harder to say than a parking lot does.

In Old North Knoxville, the grid streets run parallel to Broadway or Woodland. Give your street and the nearest cross street, plus a house number if you are parked in front of one. At a garage or lot, give the business name, the level or row and a landmark near the car.

In Fort Sanders, parking historically sat on the street or off the alley. A car in an alley may have no street address of its own, so name the street the alley opens onto, the building it sits behind and which end of the block you are nearer.

Heat, cold and anyone inside

Never leave a child or a pet in a shut car. If one is locked inside, call emergency services first rather than waiting for a locksmith. NOAA describes warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico across Tennessee, and a closed car in that air can turn dangerously hot.

Winter brings its own trouble. Average snowfall runs from 1 to 4 inches a year in the south of the state to nearly a foot in the northeast, and icy rain can seal a car door that was never locked. Check every door and the hatch; one that will not open may be frozen shut rather than locked.

What to include in your request

In a car lockout request, give:

• The location, described as above
• Year, make, model and color
• Where the keys are: inside the car, lost or broken
• Whether the car has push-button start
• Whether you are with the car now

Have a photo ID and something showing the car is yours, such as the registration, and say if the registration is inside the car. If the keys are lost rather than locked in, you may need car key replacement instead. The Knoxville page has more local notes.
