Older doors, different holes

Statewide, 33.7 percent of Tennessee homes date from 2000 or later. In Knoxville, Census estimates put 33.5 percent of housing before 1960, and original doors from that era may carry mortise locks, or bores that a modern deadbolt will not fit without an adapter plate. So measure before you shop: photograph both faces and the edge of the door, note its thickness, and measure from the door edge to the center of the existing hole (the backset).

Fort Sanders grew over roughly five decades from the 1880s, and its doors were mostly wood, with recessed panels or glass. A door with a glass panel leaves less wood beside the lock, which narrows what fits. That district's guidelines cover only additions, new buildings and demolition, so they do not speak to a change of lockset.

Fourth and Gill: original doors on the street face

Knoxville-Knox County Planning has design guidelines for 11 city districts, and in some of them the rules reach the front door. Fourth and Gill's original doors were wooden, often with beveled or stained glass inserts. Its Entrances items 1, 5 and 7 ask owners to preserve original doors, sidelights and transoms; to give security doors a color-clad frame and full-view glass; and to use solid six-panel or flush doors only on entrances not visible from the public street. When replacing beats repairing

• Keys wobble or need jiggling because the cylinder is worn
• The door has a knob lock and no deadbolt
• The bolt no longer reaches the strike even after the door has been adjusted
• Parts for an old lock cannot be found
