Battery, weather or programming?

Rule out the simple causes before booking programming. NOAA describes Tennessee as a state of moderately large temperature swings, abundant precipitation and warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, and fob batteries notice all three.

• Cold mornings. A nearly spent coin cell can last through a mild autumn and then quit on the first bitter morning, when its voltage sags. A new battery of the right size often brings the remote back.
• Humid summers. A fob carried in a pocket or left in a hot car picks up moisture. Green or white crust on the battery contacts is corrosion, and a new battery alone may not fix it.
• Floodwater. A fob soaked in a flooded car may stop working. Keep the metal key blade.

If a fresh battery does not help, or you want a spare, the fob has to be programmed to the car.

Where the car sits

Programming is done at the car, usually from the driver's seat with every key present. If the car is in Fort Sanders, where parking historically sat on the street or off the alley, say which, and whether the driver's door can open fully there. For a home garage, say whether the car can be reached with the garage door open.

What to have ready

1. Every fob and key for the car, working or not. On some models, adding a fob erases any that are not present, so a spare left at home could stop working.
2. The VIN, from the registration or the driver's door jamb.
3. Year, make and model, and whether the car has push-button start.
4. A photo ID and the registration or title, the same ownership papers a replacement key needs.
