What Knoxville weather does to a lock

NOAA's Tennessee summary describes moderately large temperature swings, abundant precipitation and warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico. Each shows up in door hardware.

• Damp and swelling wood. Wood takes on moisture from humid air and can swell against its frame. Fort Sanders doors were generally wood with recessed panels or glass, and a swollen one can push the latch off its strike. Often the fix is adjusting the strike plate or tightening hinges, not a new lock.
• Icy rain. In February 1994, 5 to 8 inches of rain fell in some places in the state, much of it icy. A lock de-icer works on a glazed keyway; hot water runs into the cylinder and can turn back to ice there.
• Floodwater. A lock that sat in floodwater can corrode inside. Once the door dries, have it cleaned or replaced.

Older hardware worth saving

Old North Knoxville's design guidelines treat repairing a window sash lock as routine window repair and ask owners to reuse serviceable window hardware (Windows item 8). Those rules are about windows, but repairing a lock before replacing it is a sound habit for an original door too. With 33.5 percent of the city's housing built before 1960, by Census estimates, many original latches and mortise locks may still be on doors here, and a weak spring, a sticking latch or a loose spindle can often be fixed without swapping the lock body.

Simple upkeep

• Use a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant in keyways, since oil collects grit.
• Tighten hinge screws before a sagging door drags the bolt.
• Never force a stiff key, which can snap off in the cylinder; see broken key extraction.
