How the weather gets into a fob

A fob spends its life in a pocket or a cup holder, and Tennessee weather reaches it there.

• Damp. Moisture that gets past the case can corrode the battery contacts. A fob that works only some of the time, or only up close, usually needs a fresh battery and clean contacts before anything is reprogrammed.
• Floods. Since 2000 the state has had 33 major disaster declarations involving severe storms and flooding. A fob that sat in a flooded car may be finished for good. Hold on to the metal key blade many fobs carry, which can still open the door, and plan on a replacement fob being programmed to the car.
• Cold. Coin-cell batteries give less power when cold, so a weak battery that got by in autumn can fail on the first frosty morning. Swap it before it runs out.

Where the car sits

Programming is done with the car present, so the request should say where it is parked and how to reach it:

• a garage name and level, for a downtown garage
• the house address and "in the alley," for a St. Elmo car parked behind a house
• the block and side of the street, for a street space

What to have ready

• Every fob and key for the car, spares included, so a spare left in a drawer is not overlooked.
• How the fob fails. Say which buttons stop responding, whether the car still starts with the fob inside, and whether the fob has been wet or dropped.
• Ownership papers and the VIN. The same ID and registration a replacement key calls for, plus the VIN.
