Which doors take a keypad

About 43.2 percent of Texas homes were built in 2000 or later, per 2024 Census Bureau estimates, and doors from that era are usually drilled for current deadbolt sizes, so a keypad or smart lock often fits without new drilling. An original door in an older Dallas house may not match. Measure the door thickness and the bore holes before you buy.

Rentals and historic homes

In a city where renters hold 57.8 percent of occupied homes, a smart lock in a rental is a question for the landlord first. The Texas Property Code's lock rules cover rented houses, duplexes, mobile homes, apartments, condos and townhomes, but not hotel rooms (section 92.152), and under section 92.163 a tenant generally may not rekey or alter a security device unless the landlord allows it. Get permission in writing, and ask whether the manager needs a code or a key to the new lock.

Compare that range with a Dallas summer and with a door that takes direct afternoon sun, and replace the batteries when the first low-battery warning appears, not after the keypad goes dark.

Keep a backup that does not depend on power or a phone: a physical key stored away from the door, or a spare code given to someone you trust.
