Try the battery first

Cabin heat and deep freezes both weaken the coin cells in fobs, so try a fresh battery before asking for programming. A fob left on a dashboard or in a hot cabin through a Dallas summer can wear its battery down early, and Texas winters bring hard freezes too.

Signs of a weak battery are shorter range, several presses to unlock, or a car that only starts with the fob held against the dash. If a new battery does not help, or the fob stopped working after being replaced, programming is the next step.

Shared garages and gated lots

Dallas has many large complexes: 23.7 percent of its homes are in buildings with 50 or more units (2024 Census Bureau estimates), so fobs often get used around shared parking garages and gated lots. A gate or garage-door remote is a separate device from the car's fob, so say which one stopped working.

Concrete and metal around a parking structure can shorten a remote's range. Before booking, try the fob from a spot outdoors or on an upper level. If it works there, the fob may be fine. If you have a spare fob, try it too: a spare that works points to the first fob, not the car.

Fobs and papers to gather

• Every working fob you own, since some vehicles need all of them present during programming.
• The VIN, plus the car's year, make and model.
• The same ownership papers a replacement key calls for: photo ID plus the registration or title.
• A note if any fob was lost, because in many cars a lost fob can be removed so it no longer works.

Say whether your fob is a separate remote or built into the key blade, and whether the car starts with a push button or a key.
