Do San Antonio doors suit a smart lock?

Statewide, Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 43.2 percent of Texas homes in buildings from 2000 or later. Newer doors are usually drilled for current deadbolt sizes, so a keypad or smart lock often fits without new drilling. An older door may be bored for other sizes, or carry a mortise lock that a standard smart deadbolt cannot replace directly. Measure the bore, backset and door thickness before you buy.

Historic districts and rentals

Olmos Park Terrace, platted in 1931, has mostly one-story Minimal Traditional or early Ranch houses, often in stone, and is one of the city's 32 local historic districts. In these districts the Office of Historic Preservation issues the Certificate of Appropriateness that exterior changes require, and whether an outside keypad counts as an exterior change is a question for that office. Some retrofit models replace only the inside thumbturn and leave the outside hardware as it was, and the city says interior alterations are not reviewed.

Renters need the landlord's permission first. Section 92.163 of the Texas Property Code bars a tenant from altering a security device without it, and section 92.153 lists the devices each exterior door of a rental must have, including a keyless bolting device and a door viewer, so check that the set stays complete after the swap. • Choose a model with a keyed cylinder, and carry a physical key rather than leaving the only one indoors.
• Replace batteries on a schedule instead of waiting for the low-battery warning.
• Keep the old lockset and its keys until the new lock has worked reliably for a while.
