When a lock problem cannot wait

Life comes first. If a child, a pet or anyone else is stuck, injured or threatened, call 911 before you call about a lock. The city's own storm guidance repeats that children and pets should never be left alone in enclosed vehicles.

• Monsoon season. The National Weather Service dates the official monsoon from June 15 through September 30, with damaging winds, torrential rain, lightning and dust storms. Outflow winds can reach 50 mph or more with very dense blowing dust. Chandler's advice for people at home is to secure outdoor objects, shutter windows and brace outside doors, so an exterior door that cannot be shut and secured as a storm moves in counts as urgent.
• Summer heat. Maricopa County says it frequently exceeds 110°F in the summer months, and the National Weather Service notes that monsoon-season lows sometimes do not drop below 90°F. Being shut out of a home in that weather is more than an inconvenience. The city lists cooling centers open May 1 through October 31.
• A break-in. Police come first, and 911 if an intruder could still be in the building. Do not tidy the door or frame before officers have seen it; photograph the damage afterward, then secure the opening so the property is not left open.

A stiff lock that still secures the door usually belongs on the repair list instead.

Storms and cars

The city tells drivers who cannot see more than 300 feet in a dust storm to get off the road, pull completely off the pavement, switch off all lights including the flashers, set the parking brake and stay buckled in until it passes. If a lockout happens with dust approaching, say so in your request.
