Locked out during a Snow Emergency

A Snow Emergency turns a car lockout into a lockout with a deadline. The city's parking rules shift over three days, and which rule applies depends on where the car sits:

• Snow Emergency routes. No parking on either side from 9 p.m. on Day 1.
• Parkways. No parking on either side from 8 a.m. on Day 2.
• Other streets. The even side must be clear from 8 a.m. on Day 2 and the odd side from 8 a.m. on Day 3. Cars on the odd side should move to the even side between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. before Day 3.

Put the day, the street type and the side of the street at the top of your request, since the car will likely need to move once it is open. This is general information, not legal advice.

Downtown and the skyway

Skyway schedules are set building by building, and most corridors close at 6 p.m. on weekdays and stay closed on weekends. If you are waiting inside a skyway-connected building, name the street-level door where you can be met instead of the corridor, which may be locked by then. If the car is in a garage, give its name, the level and the nearest street entrance.

Anyone inside comes first

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked in the car, call 911 first, in any season. In a Minneapolis winter, a car cabin turns cold once the engine stops, so do not wait for a locksmith to make that call.

What to put in the request

• The street and nearest cross street, or the garage name and level.
• Make, model, color and plate number.
• Where the keys are: in the ignition, on a seat, in the trunk or unknown.
• The registration or another proof the car is yours, if it is not locked inside.
