Proving the car is yours

Replacing a lost car key means cutting a new one and, for most newer cars, programming it to the vehicle. A key like that should go only to someone who can show they own the car or are authorized to use it. Have these ready:

• photo ID with a name that matches the paperwork
• the title or current registration; if both are lost, ask your state motor-vehicle agency about a replacement copy
• the vehicle identification number, shown on the dashboard corner through the windshield and on the driver's door jamb
• for a leased or company car, the lease or a letter from the owner

If the registration is in the glove box of the locked car, say so. It can be checked once the door is open.

When the car is stranded on the street

Kansas City code Sec. 70-641 presumes a vehicle abandoned if it is left unattended on a street for more than 48 hours, or more than 10 hours on an interstate, and allows its removal at the owner's expense. For a car stuck at the curb without a key, that clock is worth noting: write down when the car was left and plan the key replacement around the limit. This is general information, not legal advice.

What to include in the request

1. year, make and model, and whether it has a turn key, a flip key or push-button start
2. the VIN
3. whether any working key or fob remains, since a spare can make programming simpler
4. where the car is: street and cross street, driveway, or garage and level
5. whether the street is signed as a snow route
