Kansas City houses and the locks they came with

Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 20.2 percent of Kansas City homes before 1940. 2. fill the pocket and bore the door for cylindrical hardware
3. keep the old mortise body working and add a separate deadbolt above it

Doors hung in later decades usually take bored hardware, where replacement is a direct swap. Before buying anything, measure the backset (door edge to the center of the hole) and the door thickness.

Signs a lock should be replaced

• the bolt does not throw fully, even with the door held shut
• the knob or lever wobbles on its spindle, or the cylinder turns in its housing
• a door has a knob lock and no deadbolt
• you want a different function, such as levers for an easier grip or a keypad

When a lock still works and the only worry is who holds keys, lock rekeying is the smaller job.

What the city code asks of door hardware

Kansas City's Property Maintenance Code, Secs. 56-134 and 56-136, requires every doorway from a dwelling unit into a common hall, stairway or the outside to have a door with hardware capable of ensuring security and privacy, worth remembering for each unit door in a house split into flats. The same sections require every exit door to open easily from the inside, worth weighing before choosing a double-cylinder deadbolt that needs a key indoors.
