Which door you are locked out of

The kind of building decides what a lockout looks like.

• A Victorian in Huning Highlands. This neighborhood east of Downtown was platted in 1880, and most of its houses date from the 1880s to the 1920s. A door that old may hold an original lock with a newer deadbolt added beside it, so say which one is locked, or whether both are.
• A mixed-age street on the West Mesa. Newer subdivisions near the southwestern city limits sit beside homes from the 1940s, so neighbors' doors can carry hardware decades apart. A phone photo of the lock helps.
• A rental with a shared entrance. Census Bureau estimates for 2024 show 37.5 percent of Albuquerque households renting. Say whether you are outside the building door or only your own unit's door, and try the owner or manager first, who may hold a key.

When a rental lock has been changed

A changed lock at a rental is not always an ordinary lockout. NMSA 1978 Section 47-8-36(A) does not let an owner knowingly exclude a resident without a court order by changing, adding or removing a lock, with exceptions for abandonment and surrender. A resident shut out that way may seek remedies under Section 47-8-36(C), including rent abatement and damages. That is a dispute with the owner, not a lock problem. Waiting outside

Daily highs and lows in New Mexico average 25 to 35°F apart, according to the Western Regional Climate Center, so a lockout that begins on a warm afternoon can run into a much cooler evening. Wait in a car, at a neighbor's or in a nearby shop rather than on an open porch. If a child, a pet or anyone in poor health is inside, call 911.

What to have ready

• photo ID showing the address, or a lease on your phone if the ID shows another address
• the nearest cross streets; in Nob Hill's Monte Vista Addition, where streets run in an irregular pattern around the diagonal Campus and Monte Vista boulevards, name the closest intersection
• which door and which lock, and whether a key snapped off in it
