What counts as urgent in Albuquerque
Safety comes before any lock. If a person or an animal is trapped, hurt or in danger, call 911 before you call about a lock.
After that, a lock problem is urgent when you cannot get in or cannot secure the door, and local weather raises the stakes.
- Summer storms. Across most of New Mexico, July and August rain arrives almost entirely in short, often intense thunderstorms, so a door that will not close or latch lets the weather in.
- Spring wind. Wind can push an unlatched door open and leave it open.
- Cold, heat or dark. Being shut out, or unable to lock up, weighs more when the weather turns extreme or night falls.
A lock that sticks but still locks, or a lost key when a spare is at hand, can usually wait.
After a break-in
Call the police before anything else. If someone may still be inside, stay outside and call 911 from there. Leave the door and lock as they are until officers have seen them, and photograph the damage for your records and any claim. Once the police are done, the goal is a door that closes and locks, even if a full repair comes later.
Albuquerque's Housing Code sets minimum conditions for homes inside city limits. Its Section 14-3-4-4 says exterior doors should not be left unsecured, and Sections 14-3-3-1, 14-3-4-3 and 14-3-4-8 call for a sound building with no broken doors or windows. If you rent, put the problem to the landlord in writing. Suspected violations can be reported through 311, and the city investigates and requires the landlord to fix confirmed problems.
