Which lock is holding you out

In Santa Fe, a lockout often involves more than one door.

Barrio de Analco is an 18-acre historic district, roughly bounded by East De Vargas and College streets, and one of the oldest clusters of working-class homes in North America. Its adobe buildings, in Spanish-Pueblo and Territorial styles, include the two-story Oldest House, dated to 1620, and San Miguel Mission, completed in 1710. If your door is an original handmade one, say so and describe it from both sides.

Canyon Road runs parallel to the Acequia Madre, an irrigation ditch dating to 1680. Its houses were built with adobe walls and courtyards, often as compounds for extended families, so a lockout can involve the street gate, the courtyard door and the house door, and each can be keyed differently. A gate that opens does not help if the house door behind it is shut, so name every lock that is closed.

Tierra Contenta, the master-planned community in southwest Santa Fe, has had more than 3,000 single-family and multi-family homes developed since its 1994 master plan. In a multi-family building, a shared entry and your own unit door are separate locks. Say which one you are shut out of and who controls the shared one.

Guests in short-term rentals
