Safety comes before any locksmith

Some lock trouble cannot wait for a convenient day: a door that will not close after a break-in, someone shut out in bad weather, a person unwell behind a locked door, or a child or pet in a locked car. In each case, act on safety first.

• If anyone is in danger, call 911 first. A child or pet locked in a car counts.
• After a break-in, call the police. Stay out if you think someone may still be inside, and leave the scene undisturbed until officers say you may go in.
• Once police say you may, photograph the damage and mention any damaged lock or door in your request.
• A service request is not a substitute for 911.

Weather while you wait

The Western Regional Climate Center reports that daily highs and lows in New Mexico average 25 to 35°F apart, so waiting on an exposed doorstep can be a risk at either end of the day. If you are shut out, get shelter first: a car, a neighbor's home or a nearby shop.

• Canyon Road compounds. Say whether the problem is the street gate, the courtyard door or the house door. On Christmas Eve the Farolito Walk can draw thousands to Canyon Road, so give the nearest cross street and a spot where you can be found.

What to send with an urgent request

1. The address or cross streets, and the door or gate involved.
2. What happened: lockout, break-in or a broken lock. If police took a report, the report number.
3. Whether anyone or anything is inside.
4. Whether the door still closes and locks.
