Where the car is decides the request

The city's Parking Division oversees about 1,850 off-street spaces downtown, in the Railyard, Sandoval and Community Convention Center garages, the Water Street lot and the Railyard surface lots. Where you are parked changes what to tell a locksmith.

• At a meter. Meters are enforced Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., except meter holidays. A meter keeps running while keys sit locked in the car, so note when you parked and when the meter runs out.
• In a garage or lot. Name the garage or lot, then give the level and the nearest stair or exit. The Railyard has both a garage and surface lots, so say which one.
• On a residential street. Give the cross streets and which side of the street the car is on.
• At home. Give the street address, and if the car is in a shared lot, name the building.

If a child or pet is inside

Call 911 first, before you contact a locksmith, if a child or pet is locked inside the car. Never leave either one in a parked car. Also say so in your request if the engine is running or the key is in the ignition.

Details to give

1. Where the car is: the meter's block, the garage or lot name and level, or the street and nearest cross street.
2. Make, model, year and color.
3. Whether the keys are visible inside, and whether the engine is running.
4. Whether anyone or any animal is in the car.
5. Proof that the car is yours. A registration locked in the glove box will not help, so a photo of it on your phone can.
