If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out alone is locked in, call 911 now. Sun on a closed car drives the cabin far hotter than the air outside, and in winter a car with the engine off keeps losing heat. This is a 911 call, not a locksmith call.

Snow on side streets

Rio Rancho clears snow on 139 miles of roadway but removes neither snow nor ice from residential streets. Highways are NMDOT's job: it plows NM 528, NM 347 (Paseo del Volcan), NM 448 and part of US 550. After a storm, a car locked on a side street may be easy to find but hard to reach. Name the nearest plowed road and say whether the side street is passable.

Dirt roads and long blocks

The 2010 comprehensive plan says older platted lots got only a roughly graded dirt access road. Blocks can run a quarter to half a mile, and arroyos or utility corridors turned some streets into cul-de-sacs or right-angle bends. A map pin on one of those roads can lead a driver the wrong way. Describe the route in from the nearest paved street, and say whether an ordinary car can drive it after rain or snow.

The city's City Center page lists City Hall, the Rio Rancho Events Center, UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center and two college campuses there, with the core of the district north of Paseo del Volcan. If your car is at a venue, medical center or campus, give the building, the entrance you used and the row or nearest light pole.
