Locked out on a Rochester street

A car lockout here can turn into a race against the parking rules. The City's Plowing Day Parking Restriction splits the week between the two sides of the street:

Even-numbered side: parking allowed only until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Odd-numbered side: parking allowed only on Sunday, and until 7 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

A locked car cannot be moved without help, so say which side you are on and when that side's cutoff falls. When the City declares a Snow Emergency, parking is banned on Snow Emergency Routes altogether, which makes a lockout on one of those streets more pressing. Park Avenue evenings

On Park Avenue, southeast of downtown, bars, clubs and restaurants sit close together on a walkable street. A lockout on a block like that can happen with a crowd nearby and similar cars along the curb, so give the nearest cross street or a business the car is parked near, plus the car's color. Wait somewhere lit and near other people.

Waiting at the curb

Plowing-day cutoffs fall at 7 p.m., so a winter lockout near a deadline can mean waiting outside in the dark and cold. If a child or a pet is locked in the car, call 911 now; do not wait for a locksmith. A closed car can turn dangerously hot in summer sun and dangerously cold in winter. If the keys are in the ignition with the engine running, say so.
