Replacing locks in Rochester's older houses

Nearly half of Rochester's housing units date from before 1940, according to the 2022 City housing task force report. A door that old can carry hardware from several eras: an original mortise lock, a later rim lock and a deadbolt added beside them. Replacement makes sense when a lock is worn past adjustment, when its parts are no longer made or when the door needs a sturdier deadbolt.

Fitting a new lock to an old door takes more than matching a hole. Old doors can be thicker or thinner than today's standard, an old mortise pocket can be larger than a new lock body, and a frame that has shifted over decades can keep a new bolt from lining up. Under City Code Section 120-194, the Rochester Preservation Board must issue a Certificate of Appropriateness before a permit can be issued for non-maintenance exterior work on landmarks and preservation district properties. Its design guidance covers doors and says historic doors and details such as leaded glass, fanlights and sidelights should be repaired and restored rather than replaced.
