Salem has 17 recognized neighborhood associations, among them Grant, Highland, Northgate, Morningside, Sunnyslope, Faye Wright, East Lancaster, North Lancaster and West Salem.

Two residential historic districts sit close to downtown. The Court Street–Chemeketa Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, runs roughly along its two namesake streets between Mill Creek and 14th Street. Court Street is a 99-foot-wide boulevard lined with larger, older houses; narrower Chemeketa Street has mostly bungalows and cottages, some facing Mill Creek. The Gaiety Hill–Bush's Pasture Park Historic District, listed in 1986, covers 143 acres, and the Craftsman bungalow is its most common style. At its center, the 90.5-acre Bush's Pasture Park holds the historic Bush House, with the Deepwood estate beside it.

On a house that still has its original front door, a lock repair can be worth asking about before new hardware goes in, since a modern lockset may not match the openings already cut in an old door.

West Salem, across the Willamette River, is in Polk County, although Salem is the county seat of Marion County. The Marion Street and Center Street bridges link the two sides.

Businesses and buildings

Much of downtown's commercial core is the Salem Downtown State Street–Commercial Street Historic District, about 44 acres roughly bounded by Ferry, High, Chemeketa and Front streets, listed on the National Register in 2001. Its buildings date from about 1867 to about 1950 and include Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque and plain commercial designs. Downtown also has the Elsinore Theatre and the Capitol Center, built in 1927 as the First National Bank Building.

Car trouble in Salem

Downtown street parking changed on July 10, 2025, ending around 50 years of unpaid street parking. Before then, 1,106 street spaces allowed three hours at a time at no charge; paid parking now runs up to 12 hours at a time, Monday through Saturday.

Salem's recorded temperatures run from 117°F down to −12°F. On a hot day, a child or pet locked inside a car is a 911 call first; a car lockout request comes after.

Local rules worth knowing

Historic design review. Salem Revised Code (SRC) 230.200 lists the city's historic districts, including Gaiety Hill/Bush's Pasture Park, Court Street–Chemeketa Street and downtown. Under SRC 230.020(a)(2)(A), ordinary maintenance or repair with in-kind materials that keeps the existing form does not need historic design review, and the code's examples include replacing broken hardware. Replacing a door is treated differently. For historic contributing buildings in residential historic districts, SRC 230.025(c) allows door replacement only where the owner tried to repair the original door and repair was not feasible because the materials were in poor condition. Table 230-1 in SRC 230.020 makes an in-kind door replacement there a Class 1 minor review, and other door replacements on a primary facade a Class 3 major review. Check with the City of Salem before a door comes off one of these buildings.
