Locked out at a downtown space

A car lockout is getting back into a car when the keys are inside or the remote has stopped responding. Where you are parked matters more downtown than it used to. Street spaces there have been paid since July 10, 2025. Before that, street parking had gone unpaid for around half a century, with 1,106 spaces limited to three hours at a stretch. Paying now buys up to 12 hours at a time, Monday through Saturday.

At a paid space the time you bought keeps running while you wait, so note when it ends and put that in your request.

Heat and anyone inside

Salem has recorded temperatures as high as 117°F. On a warm afternoon the inside of a closed car climbs well above the air temperature. If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is shut inside, call 911 before anything else. The same goes on a freezing night if someone inside cannot get out.

If the engine is still running with the key inside, say so in the request.

Where exactly you are

Salem addresses can sit on either side of the Willamette River. West Salem lies across it in Polk County, reached by the Marion Street and Center Street bridges, so say which side you are on. Downtown, the historic core is roughly bounded by Ferry, High, Chemeketa and Front streets. Give the nearest cross streets or a landmark such as the Elsinore Theatre.

A request should also include:

1. the make, model and year
2. whether the key is visible inside, lost, or a push-button fob that stopped responding
3. whether you are on the street, in a lot or in a garage, and any gate or level
