How Salem's weather wears on locks

Salem lies in the Willamette Valley, on the wet side of the Cascades, and NOAA notes that most of Oregon gets the bulk of its precipitation in the winter months. A wood door takes on moisture over the winter and can swell, so a latch that closed easily in August can start rubbing on the strike plate by February. Damp air also reaches the pins of an exterior cylinder, and a key that begins to drag is often the first sign.

The range is wide: Salem has recorded 117°F and −12°F. Heat can dry doors and frames back out, and cold stiffens old grease inside a lock, so the same door can stick in one season and rattle in the next.

Simple upkeep helps:

1. At the end of winter, test every exterior lock. The key should turn without force and the latch should catch without a push.
2. When a key starts to drag, use a dry lock lubricant rather than oil, which holds grit.
3. If a deadbolt only throws when you lift or lean on the door, the door and strike are out of line, and the fix may be at the strike plate rather than the lock.
4. Never force a stiff key. That is how keys snap in the cylinder.

Older hardware and the repair-first rule

Where a house in the Court Street–Chemeketa Street or Gaiety Hill–Bush's Pasture Park historic district still has its original door, repairing the lock keeps that door in service. SRC 230.025(c) allows replacing the door on a historic contributing building in a residential district only where the owner tried to repair the original and could not because its materials were in poor condition. Springs, cams, strikes and worn trim on older locks can often be repaired or replaced as parts.
