Proving the car is yours

A replacement car key is cut, and on most newer cars programmed, for one vehicle, so expect to show that the car is yours or that you are acting for the owner. Have a photo ID and the registration card or title in your name. If the car is financed or leased, the lender may hold the title, so the registration card may be the paper you have. For a company or family car registered to someone else, bring a signed note from the owner. If the papers are locked in the car, say so in your request.

Salt, worn blades and spare keys

PennDOT reports an average of 598,094 tons of salt a winter over its last five winters, and salt spray reaches door locks and the keys that go into them. A worn blade, or a spare copied from a worn key, can start to catch or slip; a key cut to the car's original specification, rather than copied from the worn one, avoids carrying that wear forward. Rinsing the blade and door locks when you wash the car slows the damage.

When the car can't be moved

Snow emergency routes make a lost key more pressing. Pittsburgh Code § 531.02 bars parking on marked routes once a snow emergency is declared, and a car left there may be towed. • make, model and year, and whether the car starts with a turned key or a push button
• how many keys you want, and any keys that still work, so they stay paired with the car
