How Erie's cold affects fobs

A fob that works in September can falter on a January morning. Cold lowers the output of the coin-cell battery inside, and range is the first thing to go: you stand closer to the car, press twice, or a push-to-start car reports that no key is detected. The northwest corner of Pennsylvania, where Erie sits, gets the lake-effect snow that NOAA's state summary describes, which gives a fob battery a long cold season to fade in.

A weak battery is not a programming problem. Try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one first. Programming is for a new or replacement fob, a fob the car has stopped recognizing, or adding a spare.

Where the car will be

Programming happens at the car, usually with the ignition on and every fob present. Erie's parking rules shape where that can happen:

• Downtown, posted signs bar parking from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. in the area from Dobbins Landing to 26th Street and from Holland Street to Peach Street. A car kept on the street there overnight has to be planned around that window.
• The inner city's weekday odd-even zone ends at 32nd Street, and the post-1970 suburban streets south of 38th Street sit outside it. A driveway there keeps the car off the street entirely.
• In an attached or closed garage, open the garage door before running the engine.

What to have ready

• Every fob and key for the car, working or not. Many cars clear their stored fobs during programming and relearn only the ones present, so a fob left at home can stop working.
• The VIN, which is printed on the registration
• Make, model and year
• Photo ID and the registration or title
• Any replacement fob you already bought, with its packaging or part number; not every aftermarket fob can be programmed to every car
